As the recent demise of TomKat is announced, we take a look back at Mr Cruise’s history; his previous loves, those “in the closet” rumors, his controversial Scientology involvement and just why can’t he keep a wife?
Tom had something of a crummy childhood – he was born into a devoutly Catholic, poverty stricken family. He describes his father, in a People interview, as a “…bully and a coward“. Going on to say “…the person where, if something goes wrong, they kick you. … It was a great lesson in my life, how he’d lull you in, make you feel safe and then, bang!” “For me it was like, ‘There’s something wrong with this guy. Don’t trust him. Be careful around him.’ There’s that anxiety.”
After moderate success, confirmation as Hollywood royalty was rubber stamped with the 1986 release of Top Gun. Tom played Maverick – the flawed hero and undertaker of daring aerodynamic exploits – spawning a multitude of quotes in the process.
I could tell you some, but then I’d have to kill you…
Soon after, he met Mimi Rogers, who introduced him to Scientology, they married but it lasted just three years. The couple divorced in 1990. Mimi later told Playboy that the relationship had failed due to a lack of va-va voom in the bedroom; “Tom was seriously thinking of becoming a monk…he thought he had to be celibate to maintain the purity of his instrument.” She added that her own instrument “needed tuning.”
Ouch. That particular quote doing nothing to quell rumors that Tom was more interested in instruments bearing more similarity to his own than to hers…
On the rebound, Tom married fellow superstar Nicole Kidman the same year and despite the couple appearing as one of the most solid in showbiz, they too weren’t built to last; announcing their separation in February 2001 and divorcing that year.
Nicole remained generously loyal to her ex, later talking to Vanity Fair, about speculation over Toms sexuality, saying: “They’ve said I’m gay, they’ve said everyone is gay. I personally don’t believe in doing huge lawsuits about that stuff. Tom does. That’s what he wants to do, that’s what he’s going to do. You do not tell Tom what to do. He is a force to be reckoned with.”
Tom enjoyed dalliances with Penelope Cruz then Sofia Vergara until TomKat was created in 2005. Their first public appearance together was in April that year, followed by Cruises now infamous appearance on Oprah. Their daughter Suri was born in April 2006. The couple tied the knot in a scientology style wedding in Italy that November.
Rumors of a split dogged the couple from the beginning, among them claims the marriage was a cover-up for Tom’s homosexuality and that Katie allowed Tom to control her – still, the announcement that she was filing from divorce on 29th June 2012, came as a shock.
Tom recently told Playboy magazine how happy he was with his marriage; “She’s funny and charming, and when she walks into the room, I just feel better. I’m a romantic. I like doing things like creating romantic dinners, and she enjoys that. I don’t know what to say—I’m just happy, and I have been since the moment I met her. What we have is very special.” There’s a whole ocean of speculation as to the reasons behind the split; not least the Scientology influences on Suri, that Katie’s rumored to be concerned with.
We could go into great depth on this – we won’t. Rolling Stone conducted an expose into the insular and quite frankly – a little creepy – world of Scientology; speaking to many of it’s adherents. What’s clear is it involves the execution of some unusual activities. Suri would soon, allegedly, be expected to attend a Scientology school, potentially a hard-core centre, known as The Sea Organization, drawing comparisons with a military boot camp. Katie has petitioned within the divorce for sole custody of Suri and it’s believed that she has no wish for her daughter to continue her indoctrination into the movement. Tom, on the other hand, is a well known advocate of the religion, crediting it with curing him of his childhood dyslexia…
So why, despite dazzling good looks, a successful Hollywood career, certified A-List credentials and a multi-million dollar fortune, does Cruise seem incapable of finding a lasting union? Psychologists – incidentally, a profession which he is an outspoken critic of; identify a difficult childhood as a primary contributing factor to problems in adult relationships. His relationship with his father, the bullying and instability of his youth all seem to explain why he seeks comfort in his out-there beliefs and the familial support network Scientology affords him.
While we can only speculate on the reality within his relationships, Nicole and Katie are rumored to have found his manipulative and often domineering nature, difficult to cope with. This desire to control others is common in those who, as children, felt little or no control over their circumstances.
So what now for Mr Cruise? His latest word on his recent marriage breakup, as told to People magazine was that he was “...deeply saddened… requesting privacy while they work it out“. Damn shame? Or lucky escape for Katie? What do you think? Whatever happens, it appears we’re gonna have a TomKat fight on our hands!

Selma: Why can’t Tom hold a wife? Is marriage a cover for something else? Is he too controlling and doesn’t know how to give his wives some slack? Tom, I could almost mistake you for some sort of Persian Prince. NEWSFLASH… it’s 2012 and you need to learn how to compromise with your wife, this is a democracy. TomKat should give this DiscoveryGame a try and learn how to give and take better… well maybe in Tom’s case learn how to give more than anything.
Giulia: Scientology isn’t really my thing. In fact, most things associated with Tom Cruise’s personal life isn’t really my thing. But I do highly enjoy his films, and he sure is easy on the eyes! Whatever his reasons, Tom is a very spiritual person and I recommend this DiscoveryGame to help him find his place in the universe.
