Top five things to do on a long weekend

It’s only one extra day, but that precious 24 hours added to a weekend can transform what is otherwise a brief reprieve from work to something awesome. The May long weekend is extra special because for a lot of us it is the first warm weather long weekend of the year. (Well… relatively warm, depending on how far north you live!)

Whether you’re in Canada about to celebrate May Two-Four or in the States for Memorial Day next weekend, there are many things to choose from to take full advantage of the extra time off. Here are the top 5 May long weekend activities.

5. Watch a movie marathon

Grab a bunch of snacks from the local grocery store and set up the den for ultimate comfort as you start watching an entire series of movies preferably one with a continuous storyline. For added entertainment, watch a series that has the latest segment out in the theaters! For instance, power through the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and then watch the new installment that comes out this weekend. You can also do it with the Fast and the Furious series… On second thought, don’t do it with the F & F movies unless you’re okay with sleeping or doing “something else” through parts 2 and 3.

Of course, the key to enjoying the May long weekend is to make sure you get outside at some point. So find the closest drive-in and catch that newest installment of that series under the stars!

4. Hit up a bed and breakfast

Surprise your partner with a romantic weekend getaway! While everyone else is out there vacationing with their kids, you could be waking up to a homemade breakfast in a comfy bed with the love of your life. Then you can go out into town or see the sites, take some memorable pictures to make a photo canvas from, which could end up being the talk of the guests at your next house party.

3. Host a BBQ

Tried and true, hosting a BBQ has become a tradition for good reason! Friends, food, fire and alcohol. What could possibly go wrong with this perfect combination? Add a little spin on it this year with a theme! Try a Beers of the World BBQ, where each guest has to bring a 6 or 12-pack of an imported beer to add to the communal beer tub. And if you’re a stickler for tradition, there’s always the Hawaiian or Tiki theme.

2. A little private time

Make your single (and married) friends jealous by hiding out in your bedroom for the weekend. If you get tired of being indoors, reignite the passion by moving off to somewhere a little riskier.

1. Camping

We use this term loosely, as it can mean different things for different people. Maybe you canoe to a quiet location in the back woods and setup a tent or have a friend with a luxurious cottage on a busy lake. A lot of the people I know do “car camping” where you drive into a “camp site” and get a 20’ x 20’ patch of dirt where you park your car, light a fire and maybe set up a tent… surrounded by 5 other rowdy groups doing the same thing.

No matter your style of camping the most popular theme is that we all want to grab a case of beer and consume it somewhere remote with our friends.

If you’ve ever been in Canada for the Victoria Day long weekend, you know that this is what the “May two-four” weekend is all about. I mean, come on, most people refer to the weekend as the “two-four” weekend! For our American readers, a two-four is a case of 24 bottles of beer. ;)
