Being the reality TV junkie that I am, I’ve seen every episode of MTV’s “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica” that followed newly married couple singer Jessica Simpson and former 98 Degrees heartthrob Nick Lachey.
A little part of me dies when any Hollywood marriage breaks up, but when Nick and Jess announced their divorce in 2005 I was particularly bummed. Mostly because their wedding was beyond gorgeous, but now that Nick has announced his engagement to his longtime girlfriend, I guess it’s time for me to stop holding out hope for these two crazy kids.
Nick’s engagement got me thinking..Being a newlywed is hard–let alone with cameras on you! No wonder their marriage fell apart. There’s all this pressure for everything between you and your partner to be perfect. After all, it hasn’t been that long, right? You should be blissfully in love and mushy all the time, nevermind the adjustments it takes to be someone’s husband or wife. There’s living together, money matters, sexpectations–but society tells us that those problems and potential conflicts should not arise for awhile because we’re newlyweds.
With the divorce rate at 41% for first marriages, I say forget the rules. I think each couple has to make their marriage their own for it to work. Like this article says, ignore the traditional rules and do what works for you and your partner. After all, when all is said and done, you two are the only ones that can make the relationship work–and when it does it can be really, really great.
P.S. Does Nick look slightly terrified in this picture?
