Ever since Mark Burnett and his reality revolution got a toehold in the TV market, we’ve been inundated with show after show dafter show of young Hollywood couples living their faux lives on screen for our pleasure. Whether it was the ill-fated Nick and Jessica, the nightmarish Jon and Kate, the spritely Amber and Boston Rob, or the more sublime Tori and Dean, it seems our appetite for peeking in on the lives of beautiful, questionably talented couples is only growing.
So we’re all tied up in this stuff. Why?
Maybe it’s because we’re fascinated by the way these people, discounting their money, their plastic surgery, their mansions and their want of any humility, are just like us. They bicker, they love, they sleep with their mouths open and they are dumb and clever and bold and cowardly the same as any other person out there. But in the act of humanizing these people, we seem to either elevate them further (Ms. Kardashian anyone?) or blow them up (Susan Boyle or that strange angry lady with 8 kids and weird hair).
That could be part of it too, maybe we’re just nasty and waiting for them to disintegrate under the cameras, maybe taking cathartic pot shots at snobs and prima donnas just makes for good TV?
Is it guilty pleasure, wide-eyed idolatry, or something in between? This week at Tokii we’re talking about TV, about how we can enjoy it together, about how it can eat up time we should be spending constructively together, and about the what, how and why we’re watching.
Tokii is always interested in what you think! If you have a story, or a daydream about a brush with celebrity, tell us all about it on TokiiTales!
Watching TV couples is good fun, but lets make sure to appreciate the real life love affair we’re having right now with our significant others! Lets put down the controller for a night and put all the Brangelinas to there to shame!
