I quickly learned about Layton’s role in transforming a small political party in Canada called the New Democratic Party to a major seat holder in the House of Commons. A major portion of his respected political career was dedicated to causes such as preventing violence against women, environmentalism, fighting homelessness and unemployment, and AIDS awareness. His fight with cancer captured the hearts of Canadians everywhere and was met with sadness when it was discovered that he lost that battle on Monday morning.
The Tokii team quickly put together a DiscoveryGame as a tribute for Layton to reflect on his life and contributions for Canada and her people. We compiled some of the data from early players and have some interesting insights into the life of the fallen politician.
- 80% believe that Layton was everything to the New Democratic Party.
- 52% believed that the environment was the most important issue that Jack Layton championed.
- 42% of Canadians admired Layton for his dedication, while 38% admired him for his passion.
- 35% of the respondents were not confident in Nycole Turmel’s ability to successfully succeed Layton as the head of the NDP.
Layton had the foresight in his final days to write a letter to the people of Canada. The last line of the letter, which 70% of our Canadian respondents said inspires them, reads:
“My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.”
